The term Family Law is a broad description of the issues involving the family.  If you are looking for an Orange County Family Law attorney make sure that he or she actually practices and has experience in the area that you need legal help.  An attorney might advertise that he or she practices in all the aspects of Family Law.  However, be aware that some attorneys do not have experience in preparing or litigating ALL the issues that may arise in your specific case.  For example, just because an attorney has experience in child custody matters, does not necessarily mean that the attorney has experience in juvenile dependency matters or adoption matters.  Another example is if an attorney states that he or she handles divorce proceedings, it does not necessarily mean that the attorney also handles preparing, defending or litigating prenuptial agreements or Probate and Estate issues. Many Family Law attorneys are experienced and skillful in many areas of the field of Family Law, some are experienced in all areas.  However, there are attorneys who are specialized in a particular issue of Family Law.  For example, if you are going through a divorce, and you need spousal support and the issues are confusing and complex.  There is probably an Orange County Family Law attorney who loves to just litigate complex spousal support issues.  If you have Child Custody and support issues which can be emotional and difficult, there are attorneys who are very skillful and compassionate at handling just child custody and support matters.

The point to this article is that when you are hiring an attorney for a Family Law case, do not be shy about asking the right questions.  Ask an attorney, do you have experience in “these” kinds of matters?  If the attorney does not have experience in the type of help that you need, ask him or her if they know of an attorney who specializes in your issue.  Ask for a referral.  An Orange County Family Law attorney will most likely be happy to give you a referral to a colleague because most attorneys practicing in the Orange County area know each other or know of each other.  The community of attorneys in Orange County is pretty close knit and professional.  Many attorneys will pay a referral fee to another attorney.  So, as you can see there is a small incentive for an attorney to give you the referral that you need.  Remember that you should feel like you trust and communicate well with the attorney that you want to hire.  You do not have to settle.  There are many attorneys out there that will tell you what you want to hear.  Today’s technology allows consumers to find information quickly and accurately about an attorney.  You can look up the State Bar in your state and look up the background and history, if any, of any attorney.  Be informed enough to know what you need and what you are looking for in an attorney before you sign a retainer agreement.
